This is The Frontcourt

  • by The Staff

Welcome! This is the inaugural issue of The Frontcourt, a new online magazine about sports.

We love sports, and want you to love sports with us. Here at The Frontcourt, though, we’re doing things a little differently: Instead of just covering stats and scores, games and players, which is already being done masterfully by ESPN, Yahoo, and many others, we want to take a broader look at things. You’ll find plenty of stats and scores here, but our goal is to always be asking What it All Means. We’ll be looking into what sports means in our lives, what it means to be a sports fan, and all the nooks and crannies of the wide world of sports.

We’ll publish issues every other Sunday morning, with a number of different articles about sports. Some weeks we’ll have themes, other weeks we’ll just write about whatever piques our curiosity. In addition, we have a blog that we’ll be writing on much more often, with lots of links, thoughts, questions and half-formed crazy ideas. Things will definitely change as time goes on and we figure out a little more about what we’re doing, and we welcome your feedback (and your contributions).

The team so far, in no particular order: David Pierce, Mike Evertsberg, Doug Wong, Claire Holtzmuller, Kevin Phelan, and Joey Pierce. That’s our core group of writers and editors, and they’re the folks you’ll see the most of.

The other core of this whole project is you. We don’t know everything there is to know, and if we pretend we do we need even more to be put in our place. Comments will make this site what it can be, and we hope you’ll join in the discussion, point us to some new stuff, and teach us a whole lot more than we’ll ever teach you.

To give you a taste of what we’ll be doing here, Issue Zero features stories about why soccer’s not going to be popular in the US; the “poor” team owners who might be lying to you; how Derek Jeter’s actually pretty good again; why the practice squad’s not a bad place to be; the wonder that is Roger Federer; and more. Poke around, let us know what you think, and stay tuned for much more!

We’re excited to be launching this, and we couldn’t be more excited to have you aboard.

We're the staff of the Frontcourt - the writers, editors, and other thing-ers behind this site. We announce things from time to time.
